Welcome to Carina |
|
Hello, I am Eta of Carina, the owner of this world. I began building Carina back in January 9th 1999. I had in mind to build a world based on a short story I had written some 20 years ago. The story has since been lost except in my memory. Also, Carina was to reflect my life in the various buildings and street names. I have borrowed from the Maori language extensively although I am not Maori. The Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) where I lived for sixteen years. My apologies to the Maori people if I do not represent their language properly in any text written here. My interest in the stars (astronomically) is also reflected here as well. The night backdrop is comprised of a collage of photos I had taken from a modest telescope. The moon is also a photo and for those of you familiar with the night sky who live in the northern hemisphere, you may notice the moon appears to be upside down. This is the way it appears in the night sky of the Southern hemisphere. The day sky is comprised of panoramic shots I had taken from Onerahi in New Zealand not far from where I lived. I also model the objects on Carina based on the meshes from my favorite PC game the Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda Softworks LLC. I endeavored to model the objects as close to the original without infringing on copyright laws. The meshes in the game were mostly single pieces such as houses and walls. This doesn’t lend to creative building if all you have is a single object to place in your build so I made building modules instead of single objects. This way a builder has the option of several, a window for instance, objects to make their build unique. Even with this style of building the final outcome will still have the flavor of the original object in the game. Dissecting meshes from games has taught me a lot about modeling objects even though none of the games use Renderware. I convert from the original format to an intermediate format before finally converting to RWX. I’ve tweaked more vertices than I care to mention but all in all I enjoy making my own objects. As I had mentioned Carina is built on the basis of a short story I had written in High School. The gist of the story is this; Earth is in turmoil and war rages across the lands and in the skies. Mankind not only pollutes the world they live in but also their own bodies in genetic experiments trying to alter the physical and mental capabilities to create a super race of bipeds. Man’s attempts in this endeavor fail and the mutants they created are scorned as outcast and exiled from the cities. Mammoth starships are built and a segment of humanity escapes to the distant stars vowing to return and claim what was once theirs. They become a powerful people and return to earth to find that the earth had healed itself of the poison mankind inflicted upon it and that which they failed to do in the genetic experiments nature perfected in the surviving mutants. So the returning people set up a law that forbids the use of technology outside the compounds of the forts they built and the people who settled there live as the indigenous people do by and large. I had hoped to rewrite this story and post it here so the reader could experience the theme of Carina and perhaps partake in the atmosphere of an imaginary world. I do not believe I will be able to do this now as my writing skills have deteriorated from being unusedMy plans for Carina is to build a world that people can visit, explore and enjoy. |
