Camp Dewey

The first thing we noticed when we got to our new barracks besides them being new is..Hey hey Lockers! Yes the barracks had lockers to store our gear so we could pull our stuff out of the ditty bag and store it in the lockers instead. The second thing we learned after the Company Commander cleared out our lockers throwing everything on the floor was everything is done according to regulations. If we wanted to store stuff in the 'Navy's lockers' it will have to be folded and stored to regulations. We then learned how to fold and store our gear in the Navy's locker.

From memory I believe we were the last company to train for ten weeks. The companies after us had their training cut to seven weeks which meant there were things we did that they would not have time to do. Washing clothes was one. The new companies would have laundry services. We still washed our clothes by hand and hanged them out to dry with bits of string tied with a square knot. Everything was done with attention to minute detail. All the lockers looked the same. The towels folded with exactly the same folds position the same way. Ditty bags were hung on the racks the same way. Clothes were hung on the line at a predetermined distance for each article of clothing. If it wasn't you could be sure it would be lying on the ground the next time you looked.

Me Here is the only picture of me that made it into the Cruise book despite the fact that my company was featured in the book. Every photo on this page is of my company. I am the second from the left. Without fail every time the photographer took photos of the company in formation I was standing just out of range. Not only is this the only photo of me it also the worst photo. First of all you will notice we aren't in sync with each other. Secondly, it looks as if the guy next to me has his hand in an awkward place. Third, one fellow is wearing shoes. We are supposed to be exercising after reveille, straight out of our racks. This is why we are in our underwear. Oh well, at least I got my pictures taken.
